SAFETY DRIVER offers Defensive Driving of Heavy Equipment
The purpose of the course is to reduce accident and injury rates among operators of heavy construction equipment.

The objectives of the course are as follows:

  • Change attitude to the safety of heavy construction equipment operation;
  • Motivate people to develop a sense of commitment to operating heavy equipment responsibly and safely, urging them to master the safest and most precautionary skills of operation;
  • Expand knowledge about optimal behavioral model for the operator, about operation of heavy equipment in various conditions, and about cooperation with other workers (simultaneous operations) in order to ensure safety of driving and working;
  • Improve the following skills: distribution of attention, monitoring of conditions around the vehicle, hazard identification, assumption of actions of others, and planning of their own actions;
  • Pay attention to dangerous involuntary (reactive) skills and mistakes when driving;
  • Compare and align self-esteem and the actual level of driving skills;
  • Issue recommendation for personal development and further improvement of driver skills.


The program of the course includes the following parts:

  • Theoretical lectures – 6 hours;
  • Practical driving on municipal or federal roads – 60 min;
  • Practical driving in the driving course – 2 hours.


The program of the course includes the following elements:

  • Debrief of a few typical accidents, in which heavy equipment was engaged.  Identification of root causes and discussion over the mechanism of the event together with the attendants of workshop.
  • Typical mistakes of heavy equipment operators when preparing their vehicle for a trip/beginning of a shift.
  • Field of view and blind zones around trucks, rules of safe maneuvering for truck drivers and heavy equipment operators.  Typical mistakes when maneuvering with a high potential for a collision or runover.
  • Typical tipping over scenarios for trucks and vehicles with high center of gravity.  Actions by the driver to prevent tipping over.  How to avoid tipping over of heavy equipment.
  • Securing and shipping of heavy loads.  Safety rules.  Debrief of accidents related with the fall of loads from vehicles; statistics of such incidents, requirements of the Traffic Code regarding the securing of loads on vehicles.
